Gears 5 Released on Xbox One and PC Four Years Ago

On September 10, 2019, Gears 5 was launched for both Xbox One and PC. Serving as the sixth installment in the Gears of War series and a direct sequel to Gears of War 4, the game garnered widespread acclaim for its gameplay, narrative, visuals, and multiplayer features.

The storyline of Gears 5 followed Kait Diaz, a former Outsider who aligned herself with the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) in their battle against the Swarm, a formidable threat originating from the Locust Horde. Kait grappled with her enigmatic connection to the Swarm and the complex history of her family.

The game introduced several gameplay enhancements compared to its predecessor, including a more expansive open-world approach, the addition of a customizable robotic companion named Jack, and a repertoire of new weapons and abilities. Moreover, Gears 5 facilitated cross-play capabilities between Xbox One and PC players.

In terms of multiplayer content, the game offered a diverse array of modes like Versus, Horde, Escape, and Map Builder. Versus mode engaged two teams of five players in different modes like Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, and Guardian. Horde mode provided a cooperative experience where up to five players collaborated to withstand waves of adversaries. Escape mode introduced a fresh concept where three players endeavored to flee from a Swarm hive. The Map Builder mode empowered players to craft and share their own maps tailored for Escape mode.

Critics hailed Gears 5 for its immersive narrative, varied gameplay, impressive visuals, and seamless performance. IGN granted the game a rating of 9/10, emphasizing that “Gears 5 managed to pleasantly surprise me, both in terms of its gameplay and its story.” GameSpot also accorded a 9/10, noting that “Gears 5 looks better than ever on Xbox Series X, especially in its cutscenes.” Meanwhile, PC Gamer delivered a score of 85/100, asserting that “any relatively recent CPU and GPU should be sufficient for 1080p60 gaming with the right settings.”

Gears 5 emerged as one of the standout titles of 2019 and a commendable addition to the esteemed Gears of War series. It remains accessible on Xbox One, PC, and the Xbox Series X/S through backward compatibility.

Following the release of the game, job listings have hinted at The Coalition’s active development of Gears 6. This upcoming entry is projected to be the most ambitious yet, leveraging advanced technologies like Unreal Engine 5 and the potent Xbox Series S|X consoles. Recent rumors also suggest that Gears 6 may expand further into the open-world design seen in the previous game, potentially adopting a fully open-world approach akin to the latest title in the Halo franchise.
