Starfield Is Optimized But May Require PC Upgrade, Claims Bethesda

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Todd Howard, Director at Bethesda Game Studios, shed light on the optimization efforts put into their highly anticipated release, Starfield. While Howard affirmed that Starfield has been optimized for PC, he also hinted that some gamers might need to consider upgrading their systems to truly immerse themselves in this next-gen space adventure.

Howard stated,

“We did, it’s running great. It’s a next-gen PC game. We really push the technology so you may need to upgrade your PC for this game but it’s got a lot of great stuff going on in there and the fans’ response is awesome.”

However, early reports from PC users have been mixed. Some have praised the game’s performance, especially on AMD hardware, while others using Nvidia GPUs, particularly the RTX 3000 series, have encountered challenges. Achieving a stable 60 frames per second at 4K resolution, even with high-end GPUs like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090, has proven to be a demanding task.

Starfield does not feature Ray Tracing effects, leading some to question the extent of the game’s technological advancement. Critics have also noted the game’s graphics, pointing out that while some scenes are visually stunning, others may not meet the same standard.

Notably absent from Starfield are native supports for Nvidia DLSS 3 and Intel XeSS. While a DLSS 3 mod has been introduced by the community, it is not without cost. Mainstream graphics cards, like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, face difficulties maintaining a consistent 60 frames per second, even at 1080p and low settings, suggesting potential room for optimization.

On the positive side, Starfield showcases a commendable Level of Detail (LOD) system, demonstrating Bethesda’s commitment to pushing technological boundaries.

Bethesda’s collaboration with AMD has had a discernible impact on performance, with varying results depending on the hardware used. Some users report outstanding performance on AMD components, while others on Nvidia GPUs have faced performance issues.

Despite these challenges, Starfield is poised to be one of the standout video game releases of 2023, promising players an epic space adventure. Bethesda, however, acknowledges that achieving the best experience may necessitate a hardware upgrade for some PC gamers.
